Copper engraved map with original full wash hand colour, folding into original green wrappers with publisher’s pastedown label, publisher’s advertisements as front endpaper (wrappers little rubbed and with old signature in ink on the cover, internally clean), 45 x 37 cm (17.7 x 14.6 inches).

Description

The details mark British possessions, Franch and Portuguese settlements and the blue line indicates finished railways across the country. The latter help dating the map in the late 1860s.

The map was made under the supervision of Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, founded in London in 1826, to educate non-elite adults, and is preserved in a handsome original wrappers with advertisements by Edward Stanford Ltd., the world leading commercial cartographic enterprise.
