Description

A highly decorative book with original lino- and woodcuts in Art-Deco style by a Slovenian academic artist Miha Males (1903-1987), was published in 300 examples (this one numbered with 277).

The introduction with a short descriptions of linocut and wood cut printing, if followed by 130 original artworks, printed on thick folded paper and dated between 1920 and 1935.

Miha Males was schooled at art academies in Zagreb, Vienna and Prague, where he graduated in 1927. Influenced by the Prague art movement, he wanted to lift the art of printing on the level of painting. He founded the first Bibliophile Publishing House in Slovenia, where he was publishing original artwork, among others this book, Sence. Although a prominent artist in the post WWII era, exhibiting worldwide, his finest work is considered to be this period of late 1920s and 1930s, which was interrupted by WWII.

We could only trace one example outside Slovenia (Harvard Fine Arts Library).
