Description

The first volume and 120 pages of the second volume of this book in Ottoman language, containing a commentary on the Divan of Hafez, was printed at the press, set at the Ras el-Tin palace in Alexandria, Egypt, and the last part of the text was finished at the Bulaq Press in Cairo.

Only three complete books were printed at the Alexandria-based press, all by the same author, the leading Alexandrian scholar, Aziz Efendi: Tarih-i Napolyon Bonaparta (The History of Napoleon Bonaparte) (4 Muharram 1249), Fulk-i Aziz (The Ship of Aziz) (16 Rabi‘al-Awwal 1249) and Tarih-i italya (The History of Italy). The production of the fourth book The Commentary on the Divan of Hafez, issued in three volumes, was transferred to Bulaq in the middle of the printing of the second volume. A gazette Le Moniteur Égiptien was allegedly produced in Alexandria until the late 1834, but it was probably produced before that (Hsu Cheng Hsiang, The First Years of Arabic Printing in Egypt 1238-1269. 1822-1851; pp. 45-47; Hsu Cheng Hsiang, The First Years of Arabic Printing in Egypt 1238-1269. 1822-1851. The Checklist; no. 428, pp. 470-472.).

The production of the Commentary on the Divan of Hafez suggests, that the types from the Ras el-Tin were brought to the Bulaq Press in 1834.
