An Ottoman book on astronomy, illustrated with fine black and white aquatints, was written for educational purposes and was based on the latest French popular works on astronomy, such as books by Amédée Guillemin (1826 – 1893) and Charles Briot (1817-1882).

8°. [16 pp.], 362 pp. with black and white printed and mounted illustrations in text, 17 interleaved black and white illustrations, including one folding plate, contemporary black linen boards with debossed lined and gold debossed Ottoman insignia, greenish-brown leather spine with gold tooling and lettering, original purple endpapers (annotations in pencil to the title page and rear loose endpaper, traces of pink paper from original wrappers on the cover, internally clean with minor age-toning, endpapers with soft folds and tiny tears in margins, binding slightly scuffed with tiny chips and bumps on the corners).

The author of the book was Hasan Bedreddin (1850-1914), who was at the time working as officer, educator and translator at the military school. He later became a known playwright, working closely with Manastırlı Mehmet Rıfat (1851-1907). In 1876, Hasan Bedreddin, together with Mehmet Rıfat , became one of the leaders of the coup, which overthrew sultan Abdulaziz.

This is the second edition. The first edition was made for the school year of 1292 of the Ottoman Hijri calendar, suggesting it was made 1876 AD or before.

There were at least four editions, which differ by numbers of plates. Some later editions kept the date 1292 on the title page.

We could find four examples of the first edition on Worldcat (National Library of Israel, Universiteitsbibliotheek Leiden, Boğaziçi University Library, Linda Hall). Our, second edition, is dated 1301 on the last page.
