8°. 53 pp. with portrait on the first page, rear wrappers with cover in Russian, later green cloth with title in small gold letters on the top of the front board (slightly age-toned with light foxing, a clear tear in the portrait, a tiny chip to the Russian title, otherwise in a good condition).

Description

The author Uzeyir Hajibeyov (Üzeyir Hacıbəyov 1885 – 1948) was a pioneer of the Azeri opera and the first composer of an opera in the Islamic world, being Leyli and Majnun, first performed in 1908. He composed the national anthem of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and the anthem, used by Azerbaijan during the Soviet period. Uzeyir Hajibeyov was also active as a writer, publicist and a social figure.

Hajibeyov composed Arşın mal alan in Saint Petersburg and the piece was first performed in 1913. The story is about a bachelor, who camouflaged as a fabric peddler enters private homes in order to find a wife. The operetta was popular from Istanbul to Iran and is still performed today all over the world. A popular film, based on the story was made in 1945.

This is the third edition. We could not find any examples of the first two editions. Worldcat lists five examples of the third edition (Princeton University Library, McGill, Bibliothèque nationale de France, UCAL Library, Columbia University). The other listed examples appear to be eBooks.
