View of Derbent, the southernmost city in Russia from a scarce series of city views by Peter Schenk the Elder (ca 1660-1711). Engraving shows the ancient fortress and ruins of a city with a caravan in the front.
Derbent was an important fort in the Middle East on the Silk route from the ancient times on. From 16th to the end of the 19th century Debent belonged to Persia. It was occasionally briefly taken by the Ottomans and Russians.
Trimmed to image and mounted on old paper, otherwise in a good condition. With highly decorative original colouring.
