Description
A German broadside for a performance of a French female tightrope walker Madame Saqui (born Marguerite-Antoinette Lalanne 1786 – 1866) in Düsseldorf on September 17, 1833. On the day Madame Saqui, a celebrity of the time, stood on one foot on a lifting large balloon and continued with (an equestrian performance?) Le Pas Espagnol, followed by acts of other performers.
The broadside mentions Madame Saqui’s nickname A Female Devil (Une Diable Femelle) at the French court, after Napoleon’s cry “This is not a woman, it is a female devil!” when witnessing one of her performances.
In 2020 a children’s book on life of Madame Saqui, written by Lisa Robinson and illustrated by Rebecca Green, was published under the title Madame Saqui. Revolutionary Rope Dancer.
