Description

An ode in honour of the Duke of Brabant, the later king of Belgium, Leopold II, was printed in a limited edition for the duke’s 18th birthday. This example, bound in a striking blue watered-silk binding, signed by Mertens, was presented to the 18 year old Leopold himself and was later kept in the king’s private library.

The author of the ode in Eugène Stroobant (1819-1889), a Belgian politician and writer, active in Flemish literary, theatrical and cultural circles in Brussels. He became one of the first members of the Royal Flemish Academy of Language and Literature, founded in 1886.
