Although without formal university education, Mayer became one of the leading scientists of the mid-18th century Germany. He was known for his discoveries on the field of astronomy, measurements and terrestrial magnetism. Mayer was also an author of scientific works and a map maker. Many of his maps with corrected surveys were published by the Homann Heirs in Nuremberg.
