Description

SOLD. [Düsseldorf. With the Approval of Mr. Mayor presenting for the first and only time, on August 27, 1813, in the Hall of the Cassino: Large Art Exhibition of Living Statues Groups and Paintings, by Mrs. Professor Elise Bürger].

Lady Professor (Professorin) Elise Bürger, mentioned on the broadside, was Marie Christiane Elisabeth „Elise“ Bürger, née Hahn, a German writer and actress.

Bürger took over the professor title after her former husband, a famous German poet Gottfried August Bürger (1747 – 1794), who married a much younger Elise, after she proposed to him through a poem. The marriage was ended less than two years later, when Gottfried August Bürger caught his wife in flagrante in bed with another man. Elise lost the right to an alimony and ever remarrying.

After the divorce Elise Bürger entered the theater. She was also authoring literary works, mostly poems and theater pieces.
