This rare optical view shows a theatrical scene made by Lodovico Burnacini in Vienna for the Opera Il Pomo d’Oro,
Lodovico Burnacini (Mantova, 1636 – Vienna, 1707) was an Italian architect based in Vienna, where he worked as an architect for Leopold I of Habsburg. In 1660-65 he built a part of Hufburg in Vienna and in 1665 the Opera and Theater building, which was later demolished. From 1687 he designed the figures of the Pestsäule (English: Plague Column), a Holy Trinity column located on the Graben, a street in the inner city of Vienna, together with Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and Paul Strudel.
The Opera and Theater was opened in 1668 with the Opera “II Pomo d’oro”, which included over 100 elaborate productions, which are considered as highlights of the early Baroque Theater.
The engraver Tobias Lobeck was active in Augsburg in the 18th century, specialised in decorative prints. He also cooperated with Tobias Lotter on his atlases.
