The author Mehmet Ziver Bey (1868-?), born on Lesbos, worked as a teacher of French and geography, and later as a science teacher and director of high school in Thessaloniki. In 1891, he was appointed the director of the high school in Rhodes and later among others in Kosovo, Shkodra, Aleppo and Bursa.
He authored two history books: one on the history of Rhodes and the second on Cyprus, published in Nicosia in 1896, both considered to be pioneering Ottoman works on the subject.
Ziver Bey focuses on the history of the island before the Ottoman rule from the antiquity, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the Grand Masters, the Princes of Rhodes with their coats of arms and biographies, until 1523, when the Knights were forced to surrender to the army of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.
