A part of an exceedingly rare, possibly first translation of Shahname to Gujarati.

 

Large 8°, [5 pp.], 890-1008 pp. title in Gujarati and English, text in Gujarati, mounted paper label “Presented by the Trustees of the Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy Translation Fund” on the inner side of the front board, contemporary half goat binding with gold tooling in the corners and on the spine, marbled paper boards with mounted original label on the cover (minor age-toning to the endpapers, internally clean, boards with minor wear, read board cracked horizontally, but stable and without missing material, chips to the spine).

Description

This exceedingly rare translation of Shahname for Gujaraty was made by a linguist and translator Munsookh (also Mr. Muncherjee Cawasjee Shapoorjee for Rániná at the Union Press, a publishing house in Mumbai, specialized in educational books, translations and English editions.

This example bears a label “Presented by the Trustees of the Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy Translation Fund”. The foundation was established in 1849 by Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy, 1st Baronet Jejeebhoy of Bombay (1783 –1859), a wealthy Indian-Parsi merchant and philanthropist.

This is the 8th part only (of ?).

We could not find any examples of this edition nor any records of translations of Shahname to Gujarati before the 1914-1918 edition, translated by Dastur Faramroz Kutar and his brother Ervad Mahiyar Kutar and published in 10 volumes.
