The book is based on Sekelj’s six-month stay in Nepal in 1957, which occurred upon the invitation of King Mahendra. Sekelj inspired the king to open the first people’s university and introduced Esperanto an international language to the country.

Tibor Sekelj wrote the original text in Esperanto under the title Nepalo malfermas la pordon,

while he resided in Madras, studying yoga philosophy. The book was published in 1959 by La

Laguna Esperanto publishing house. The first Serbian and English translations were made in

the same year and were followed in 1960 by a Slovenian translation.

The Esperanto publishing house Stafeto was run by Juan Régulo Pérez in La Laguna, Tenerife Island, between 1952 and 1975, when they pubilshed 93 books.
