An original water-coloured drawing on oval thicker paper, mounted on a contemporary tan paper, represents young Karl, Freiherr von Schrenck (1806-1884), from a noble German family Schrenck von Notzing, a later Bavarian Minister of Justice.
Karl von Schrenck was born in Munich as a son of a lawyer and Minister of Justice Sebastian Freiherr von Schrenck von Notzing. In 1846 he took over his father’s work as a minister, but was fired one later along with other ministers by Ludwig I of Bavaria for signing a memorandum against his lover Lola Montez. The following year, in 1848, Montez had to flee Bavaria during the revolution.
After the revolution Karl von Schrenck continued his work in the politics as a member of the parliament and as a minister in various offices.
The portrait was made around 1820, showcasing Karl von Schrenck in his mid or late teens. The portrait was probably originally inserted in an early 19th century album or memory book.
